Lifelong learning for sustainable human resources through distance education in developing nations

Resumo

Os desafios iminentes estão no horizonte como resultado das mudanças rápidas e contínuas nos ambientes socioeconómicos dos países de todo o mundo. Como todos os recursos – financeiros, materiais, mecânicos e humanos estão sendo impactados, é necessário melhorar e atualizar continuamente esses recursos. É aqui que entram em jogo a sustentabilidade e a continuidade para garantir novos recursos. Daí a necessidade de instituições que possam proporcionar oportunidades de aprendizagem ao longo da vida às pessoas. A Índia, um país em desenvolvimento, tem uma base humana considerável, que vive tanto em áreas urbanas como rurais. Posteriormente, aprofunda-se detalhadamente na infraestrutura educacional do país, seguido de um relato abrangente da universidade aberta nacional, IGNOU, e das importantes dimensões e empreendimentos desta instituição de ensino superior única que fazem desta organização um centro de excelência para a aprendizagem ao longo da vida. .

Abstract

Impending challenges are on the horizon as a result of the rapid and continuous changes in the socioeconomic environments of countries worldwide. Since all resources—financial, material, machine, and human are being impacted, it is necessary to continually improve and upgrade these resources. This is where sustainability and continuity come into play in order to guarantee new resources. In order to properly deal with environmental dynamism, human resources must also work toward knowledge updation and enrichment. This chapter provides an insight into the demographic profile of the youth and adult population in India that forms the vast human resource. Subsequently it delves in detail into the educational infrastructure of the country, followed by a comprehensive account of the national open university, IGNOU and the important dimensions and ventures of this unique higher education institution that go to make this organization a center of excellence for lifelong learning.

Indira Gandhi National Open University, INDIA. With a career spanning more than 20 years, Dr. Mukerji has been performing multi-faceted roles of an educator, trainer, and facilitator, responsible for key roles in learner recruitment management, student performance assessment process, and training, skill development and competency enhancement of higher education professionals. She is presently Additional Director, responsible for student performance assessment and related support services management in Indira Gandhi National Open University, New Delhi (India). Actively engaged in academic research and publication, she has more than twelve books to her credit on Interactive Technology Environments in Higher Education, and Transnational Collaborations and Learning.

Indira Gandhi National Open University, INDIA. Assistant Regional Director at Indira Gandhi National Open University, India has professional experience of more than a decade in Open and Distance Education. Her qualifications include Master of Arts (Distance Education), Ph.D. (Botany) and Master of Science (Environmental Botany). She has been the Junior Research Fellow, Senior Research Fellow as well as Research Associate of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (India), a premier national Research and Development organization. Her areas of interest include Technology-Enabled and Open and Distance Learning, Technology integration in Distance Learning etc.
