The ethic of relation in research with human subjects

Abstract

This article adopts a theoretical-reflective approach to explore ethics in research with human subjects, with a particular focus on the Humanities. It discusses the relevance of going beyond mere compliance with bureaucratic norms, highlighting the dynamic nature of ethical standards that reflect evolving values and practices. The work emphasizes the complexity of research involving human beings, underscoring the need for continuous evaluation and reflection on research practice. The central concept of the article is relational ethics (Levinas, 1988), which prioritizes otherness and responsibility towards the other. Specific foundations for integrating relational ethics in research are outlined, including humanizing the process, recognizing the complexity of participants' identities, and the importance of continuous reflection.
