Impact of an active school program on reducing compulsive smartphone use in adolescents: A randomized clinical trial
Resumo
O uso excessivo de smartphones entre adolescentes está associado a prejuízos comportamentais, sociais e escolares, configurando desafio à saúde pública. Este estudo avaliou o impacto de um programa escolar ativo na redução do uso compulsivo de smartphones. Ensaio clínico randomizado incluiu 168 adolescentes (11–19 anos) de duas escolas públicas, divididos em grupo intervenção (n=84), que participou de atividades físicas três vezes por semana, e grupo controle (n=84), que manteve rotina habitual. O estudo foi aprovado pelo Comitê de Ética. Os resultados mostraram redução significativa nos escores de uso compulsivo no grupo intervenção. Conclui-se que programas escolares ativos podem contribuir para diminuir o uso problemático de smartphones, reforçando a importância de estratégias preventivas no ambiente educacional.

Abstract
Excessive smartphone use among adolescents is associated with behavioral, social, and academic impairments, posing a public health challenge. This study evaluated the impact of an active school program on reducing compulsive smartphone use. The clinical trial included 168 adolescents (11–19 years old) from two public schools, divided into an intervention group (n=84), who participated in physical activities three times a week, and a control group (n=84), who maintained their usual routine. The study was approved by the Ethics Committee. The results showed a significant reduction in compulsive use scores in the intervention group. It is concluded that active school programs can contribute to reducing problematic smartphone use, reinforcing the importance of preventive strategies in the educational environment.
