Impacts of Excessive Screen Use on Health and Academic Performance of University Students
Abstract
Abstract
The article analyzed the impacts of excessive screen use among university students, addressing physical, cognitive, and emotional effects as well as their academic implications. The study was based on a questionnaire administered to 246 students after a lecture at a federal university in Minas Gerais, Brazil. For analysis, four categories were established: the relationship between excessive screen use and academic performance; effects on physical health; impacts on emotional health; and strategies for reducing screen time. The results showed an association between frequent device use and symptoms such as eye strain, pain, anxiety, and lack of concentration. In the academic context, it was found that device use in the classroom—often for non-educational purposes—represents an additional challenge to the learning process, fostering distraction and reducing engagement, study time, and attention.
Keywords: Learning; Excessive Screen Use; Academic Performance.
